Chapel Hill Winery

Onkaparinga National Park

In addition to Chapel Hill’s fine wines and experience at the Retreat, the estate borders the beautiful Onkaparinga National Park.

If you are interested in walking, fishing, canoeing, rock climbing or photography, this spectacular park is a must visit for you. Kangaroos are often seen bounding along our fence lines, with countless birdlife on offer. You can canoe your way along the Onkaparinga River – South Australia’s second longest river – which enters the park in a steep sided valley and flows into a magnificent gorge with cliffs up to 50 metres high and large permanent rock pools.

The park, which incorporates the Onkaparinga River Recreation Park, follows the river to the sea, discovering an entirely different environment in its estuary and wetlands. It is here that you can go fishing in the estuary waters.Experience the Onkaparinga Gorge’s spectacular rugged scenery and the contrasting wetlands which provide ideal breeding habitats for numerous fish and bird species along an array of walking trails – ranging from easy walks to challenging hikes. Along the Echidna Trail you can even discover heritage-listed huts and ruins of houses that were built in the 1880s.

A bird’s eye view of the park can be seen by scaling solid cliff rock faces in designated rock climbing areas – experienced rock climbers only. You can also walk your dog within the recreational zone of this park, between South Road and commercial Road, providing it remains under your control on a lead.
