Chapel Hill releases it’s first Olive Oil

Chapel Hill is excited to announce the release of our first il Vescovo Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)! The inspiration behind the il Vescovo EVOO was to produce an oil which would showcase the quality and range of olives available to us in McLaren Vale. Our close association with high quality food through The Retreat at Chapel Hill and my passion for olives, makes olive oil an ideal accompaniment to our wine range.

As the viticulturist for Chapel Hill, visiting vineyards all around our region, I am often lured away from the grapevines to the neighbouring olive groves and feral olive trees that line the roadsides. As with vines, the many varieties and soil types produce olives with distinctly different characteristics from soft, fruity flavours to the green, peppery, pungent flavours which are my personal favourite.

This year, il Vescovo EVOO is a blend of three Italian varieties – Coratina, Frantoio and Pendolino. The oils chosen reflect varietal purity and were sourced from the slightly cooler areas on the fringes of the hills surrounding McLaren Vale; they have been combined to make a balanced and flavoursome oil. On the nose there is cut grass, banana and green bean and on the palate lots of pepper and a hint of pungency.

As an avid home cook, I use this oil liberally for enhancing flavour in the dishes I am preparing. A robust oil such as this is best used with bold flavours such as marinading red meat, braising, roasting vegetables, classic pasta dishes, drizzling over salads, finishing soups and dipping bread — but it can be used for just about anything!

This year’s release of il Vescovo EVOO will retail for $25 per 750ml bottle and will be initially only available at the Chapel Hill Cellar Door & Gallery, with selected distribution in fine wine and premium food retailers being sought following release.
